IIT Bombay Research Internship Award

Developing a Real-Time Virtual Reality 6DoF Narrative

MentorProf. Jayesh S. Pillai
DurationJan – Jun 2027
Stipend₹15,000/mo

You'll help build an experimental VR narrative where the story isn't just something you look at — it's something you move through, with six degrees of freedom shaping how the plot unfolds.

What you'll do

Prototype and test a real-time 6DoF VR narrative — one that sits somewhere between a game and a film — working alongside the lab's research team on storytelling techniques, spatial design, and interaction. If the work holds up, it goes further: toward a research paper on what actually makes 6DoF storytelling work. You'll be building on the same ground as Belonging and Into the Manhole, two 6DoF narratives already made at IMXD Lab.

You'll be a good fit if

  • You've got some Unity (C#) or Unreal (Blueprint) experience, or are eager to pick it up fast.
  • You're interested in how VR, AR, or spatial design change what a "story" can be.
  • You like the idea of research that ends in something people can actually put on and walk through — not just a paper.

Open to 3rd/4th-year Bachelor's or 2nd-year Master's students in Computer Science, Multimedia and Gaming, Animation & VFX, Design or related fields.
