Developing a Real-Time Virtual Reality 6DoF Narrative
This project involves the design and development of an experimental virtual reality narrative, exploring storytelling with six degrees of freedom (6DoF) — an experience in which the participant is not limited to observing the story environment, but can move through it in real time.
Role Overview
The intern will prototype and test a real-time 6DoF VR narrative situated at the intersection of interactive gaming and film, working alongside the lab's research team on storytelling techniques, spatial design, and interaction. Where results are substantial, the outcome may be developed into a research paper. This project builds on prior IMXD Lab work in 6DoF narrative design, including Belonging and Into the Manhole.
Desired Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Unity (C#) or Unreal Engine (Blueprint), or willingness to acquire it.
- Interest in how virtual reality, augmented reality, or spatial design can reshape narrative and storytelling.
- Interest in research that results in a tangible, experiential outcome, in addition to a written one.
Open to 3rd/4th-year Bachelor's or 2nd-year Master's students in Computer Science, Multimedia and Gaming, Animation & VFX, Design or related fields.
